General Electric is formed with headquarters in Boston.

April 15, 1892

Incorporated in Schenectady, New York, on April 15, 1892, the company is formed through a merger of the Edison Electric Light Company and the Thomson-Houston Electric Company. Charles Coffin is the first chief executive. Its main manufacturing plants are located in Schenectady and Lynn. The company’s headquarters move to other locations, then back to Boston in 2016.* It breaks up into three separate companies on April 2, 2024.
